Production Process of Wood Plastic Decking

WPCs are produced by thoroughly mixing ground wood particles and heated thermoplastic resin. The most common method of production is to extrude the material into the desired shape, though injection molding is also used. WPCs may be produced from either virgin or recycled thermoplastics including high-density polyethylene (HDPE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene (PP), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polystyrene (PS), and polylactic acid (PLA).

PE-based WPCs are the most common. Additives such as colorants, coupling agents, UV stabilizers, blowing agents, foaming agents, and lubricants help tailor the end product to the target area of application. Extruded WPCs are formed into both solid and hollow profiles. A large variety of injection molded parts are also produced, from automotive door panels to cell phone covers.

In some manufacturing facilities, the constituents are combined and processed in a pelletizing extruder, which produces pellets of the new material. The pellets are then re-melted and formed into the final shape. Other manufacturers complete the finished part in a single step of mixing and extrusion.

FAQ

Q: What is the plastic wood for decks called?

A: PVC decking is made of plastic called polyvinyl chloride and doesn't feature any organic materials like wood pulp. Because it's made of synthetic polymers, PVC decking is extremely low maintenance, and water and weather resistant.

Q: What is the largest deck without a permit?

A: The biggest size of deck that can be built without a permit is 200 square feet. However, deck design and height should also be considered when planning permit-free projects.

Q: What do you put under plastic decking?

A: A sturdy and level foundation is essential for laying composite decking and ensuring its longevity and stability. The best materials for this purpose include concrete, pressure-treated timber, plastic lumber, and aluminium.

Q: What is the life expectancy of plastic decking?

A: While this lifespan will vary depending on the manufacturer, material quality, maintenance and installation, composite decking typically lasts 25-30 years. However, it can go far beyond this if well-maintained.

Q: Can you screw into plastic decking?

A: Strictly speaking, yes you can, but you shouldn't. As well as voiding your composite decking warranty, screwing boards in place will cause you all kinds of problems in the long run.

Q: Which is better composite or plastic decking?

A: When it comes to slip resistance, composite decking is the clear winner. This is mainly due to the wood fibres which give composite decking boards a rougher texture than plastic decking. This gives them more grip underfoot meaning you're far less likely to slip on them when wet.
